As NORTHERN FEED AND BEAN celebrates its 70th year in business it is bridging the gap between the strength of the past and growth for the future. Northern Bean and Feed is dedicated to helping local bean growers and livestock producers in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska.
“There are two sides of our business. And it’s in the name: feed and bean,” says Jay Ewald of Northern Feed and Bean. “I came in when the business was turning a chapter. We’re leveraging 70 years of legacy while moving on to the next chapter. We’re revamping our corporate image from yesteryear to something fresh.”
The company has spent decades perfecting operations to provide the best feed and beans for grower’s operations. Their bean services included certified Pinto and Mayocoba bean seed, contracting for new crops, field advisory services, processing, storing and marketing.
Northern Feed and Bean provides feed, not only for large-scale rancher and producers but also for companion animals and show livestock. The feed program is a full-line Purina dealer, has on-site feed specialists, serves all species of livestock, and is dedicated to providing quality and value.
Ewald says he discovered the three pillars Northern Feed and Bean was built on when he joined the business. The first thing he noticed was quality.
“Whether it’s the quality of our beans or our service, quality is in the fiber of what we do. We provide quality service and seed to our growers, quality feed and quality service to customers,” says
Ewald. “There’s quality when it comes to the people we deal with, too. Our employees, customers, and growers are all quality.”
Secondly, Ewald says he saw trust in every business relationship the company had.
“Trust is the basis of the relationship with our growers and customers. It’s a handshake. It has been and will remain that,” says Ewald. “We have very little employee or grower turnover. Our retention is incredibly high because of the tremendous level of trust between everyone.”
The third pillar of the business is its family culture.
“We’re a company that feels like family,” says Ewald. “I came in with one more pillar, and that’s growth. We’re going to grow organically and in a smart way. We’re looking for additional high-quality growers. We’re solidifying and taking care of existing customers while growing each year.”
Following that growth mindset, Northern Feed and Bean is moving to a new retail location at 230 1st St. in Ault.
“It will help better meet and exceed the customer expectations for fast and friendly service,” Ewald says.
The company is also launching a new website in January that will be a full e-commerce site.
“It will create additional reach for our retail feed and bean customers,” he says. “This will allow a customer to order product online, stop in and pick up their order with super-fast and friendly service.”
